Gizo- Kennedy Slept Here

Greetings, one and all!   We've spent the past 5 days making the run up from the Coral Sea to the Philippines, and I've been recuperating relaxing after our visit to Papua New Guinea.... but more on that in another post.

Before we make landfall/see land again/arrive in port, I thought I'd get myself up to date.  After today, we will have only 5 sea days over the next 2 weeks....so I will be a busy lass.

In Gizo, Solomon Islands, I took an excursion for a little snorkeling.  We took a "banana boat" (I would call it a speedier version of a jon boat) over to "Kennedy Island".  Why is it called Kennedy Island, you ask?  Well, it is the tiny little patch of land where then-Lieutenant John F. Kennedy swam with his remaining crew after his PT boat was rammed and cut in half by a Japanese destroyer.

This is kinda what the place looked like when Lieutenant Kennedy swam in...

I picked out my little patch of heaven...

Accepted a welcoming coconut...

Had a cousin sighting (Hi, Merrill/Bob)...

And wife (hi Andi!!)....

Grabbed my trusty GoPro Blackie (thanks again, Laird)...

And got in the water.

There's a story here......

Obligatory toes (or rather aqua shoes)-over-the-beach-photo...

Cousin Merrill treated me to a much-appreciated beer (hey, snorkeling is hard work!)...

And the little bar area was decorated with reminders of the hell that occurred here during WWII...

These hammocks have Laird's name written all over them.....this would be his idea of heaven- not many people, gorgeous water, a few beers and an afternoon snooze in a hammock.

I wish I had something for scale with this mini-army of fiddler crabs...

Pretty much paradise!
