2009 Tennille BBQ Blast

The Third Annual Tennille BBQ Blast stretched over Friday, October 16 through Saturday, October 17.

Friday afternoon, Grumpy Guy/Alan, who is President of the Tennille Downtown Development Authority, hopped into the golf cart (yes, that's how we get around Tennille most of the time!) to check on the progress of things. Penelope greeted us from atop a shop roof.

Cute autumn decorations were everywhere.

One of the storefronts were displaying Tennille's famous Civil War cannons.

BBQ teams were beginning to assemble their cooking implements.

We returned that night to participate in the festivities and smell the barbeque.
Chip even joined us for a while.

The hog calling contest was a source of laughter and applause.

And won by this young gentleman.

They guys from Chester Dean's were up late!

The funnel cake van was doing great business!

The trains continued to roll all night, just like normal.

The band was great...

as the pork began to sizzle.

Come morning, things were looking really good.

The Blast as seen from Maison Cou Rouge on Saturday morning.

A chilly morning as folks got organized.

Tasting and voting began.

Something good is always cooking in a cast iron skillet-in this case, hoecakes.

Penelope makes an appearance.

Best two dollars spent- for a taste of all the competition, and a vote for People's Choice!

We took our time figuring out which we liked best.

Fresh fried pork rinds dipped in amazing sauce- THAT's good eatin'!

A future participant?

Roan always has a good time...and usually wins more than one category!

If you are tired of BBQ, there's many OTHER delicacies to choose from!

The antique car show grows bigger and bigger each year!

Now that the Tennille BBQ Blast is three years old, it can request to become a BBQ championship sanctioned event. That should ensure it continues to grow every year! Watch here for developments!

2009 Kaolin Festival

The Kaolin Festival is a big tradition in Washington County. This year's parade and festival on the square was no exception.

Before the parade, the square was not as crowded, so I got to snap photos of friends easily.

One of our local artists, the very talented Alan King.

The Atkinson Girls are beautiful, aren't they?

The Gullah Guy with the seagrass baskets is one of my favorites. This year, I introduced Susanne and Karen to him. They got several Christmas presents out of the way!

Our friends the Giles came down from their new home outside Athens (where Dr. Perry is now responsible for the eyes of the University of Georgia!). We miss them so much- it was great to see them working Lori's parents' barbeque booth!

Craft booths were everywhere.

Street food is just wonderful this time of year.

The parade began- led off, by tradion, with Sheriff Thomas Smith driving his darling mother, Miss Betty.

Miss Betty used to live in Maison Cou Rouge...and the sheriff grew up here!

Ben and Hugh Tarbutton were the parade's grand marshals. We loved seeing their grandchildren on the Sandersville Railroad float.

Their parents, our friends Charles and Helen, seemed to be having a good time as well.

A bagpiper piped the whole 3 miles of the parade route.

What's a parade without old tractors?

So proud of our Brentwood Cheerleaders!

Alix's friend Taylar is one pretty girl!

We have lots of great sports in Washington County.

The Tennille BBQ Blast Mascot, Penelope Pig, visited the parade.

Washington County High School's Air Force Junior ROTC program marched with precision.

Alix's friend Ainsley, is Miss Beta Club.

Our crowd outside friend Susanne's shop Tips to Toes.

The WaCo High School Marching Band played "Thriller"--Dynamite!

and WaCo's cheerleaders looked fabulous.

Every parade needs some Harleys...

and some cloggers.

Miss Jane and I were invited to display our smartcars at the carshow.

The day was a huge success and a great lead in to the following week's Tennille BBQ Blast!
